Who are you?
As a kid, I collected nature trinkets on walks. I was the first up the tree. I got intentionally lost in the woods and spent hours just looking at the natural world around me just to see what I could see.
When I was a teen and young adult, I worked in a garden nursery and even ran a campus lawn and garden crew. But when I got my own home, taking care of my little bit of earth suddenly felt intimidating. Local nurseries had plants and resources to execute all kinds of plans, but I didn’t have one. Most of their plants were trendy.
- I wanted to protect my home from pests
- I wanted good things from the garden in our lives
- I wanted something that was good for the planet
- I was stuck
How could I take care of the little plot of nature I was now responsible for, that wouldn’t come back and bite me every season, in five years, or even by the time my mortgage was paid off?
There was too much to think about, so I let my yard sit for 5 years, planted in pots a bit, and composted everything I could. I live in Texas, so it was a slow path toward brown dead grass and extreme water problems.
Then a friend, also in Texas, showed me around her garden. And she was doing exactly what I had in mind. Her garden produced all kinds of edible things.
She had everything!- pollinating flowers,
- Native trees,
- Berry brambles,
- Grape vines,
- a mini orchard,
- a gorgeous vegetable garden,
- herbs for her kitchen
- a mini greenhouse
- and a design that made everything look like it had always been there and would be there for a long time!
I asked her where I should start and she gave me one new term to do my own research. Permaculture.
It was a lot. Composting toilets! And again, I felt, intimidated.
Enter Regenerative Gardening. It’s a step toward permaculture. It’s a step to get me back into our own yards today, while learning all that permaculture can do for my city when I’m ready. [Flood prevention, Fire prevention, Drought Prevention, Water Table restoration, soil restoration. If the soil dies, we die.]
What if we could make small choices every day that help the bees, give rest to migratory birds, and nourish the soil?
What if our love for trees and growing things could be the start of an old/new way of giving the earth a hand in her own healing, save some birds from extinction, and contribute to the solution of hive collapse. We need to feel good as we do good too!
Feel good as you do good. Just ask the grove.
Where did our name, Grove Wisdom, come from?
I returned to my first love. Trees.
You should have seen the first conversation I had with a local arborist! He thought I had 4 heads. No homeowners were asking about tree reproduction and excess pollen!
And when I learned a grove was one of the most efficient and effective ecosystems for creating healthy biodiversity, and it only took a few native species to produce abundance for all kinds of life.
Intimidation started to fade, the trees were showing the way.
My job was now to belong. Join my ecosystem, support the life in it. Be apart of the ecosystem of my own backyard.
Rather than plant whatever I saw was trending in my neighborhood, I could listen to what the land needed and build from there. My little yard already had the best start. A grove. It was time to learn from its wisdom, I just had to cooperate.
I had that feeling that I couldn't be the only one. That there were lots of us who wanted to care for the earth from our own backyards. People who recycled and investigated bottle-free shampoo. People who treasure life and are curious about how small science-based choices could change their whole neighborhood. Fight draught. Protect our water table. Even restore it. Restore the earth, one backyard at a time.
Grove Wisdom was born.
